About us
We are here to help
The lack of access to reliable sources of energy in rural areas globally is a crucial issue that requires urgent attention. The consequences of this predicament are far-reaching and have detrimental effects on rural communities’ lives. With limited access to basic services such as lighting, heating, cooking, and refrigeration, rural communities’ economic development is obstructed. Rural areas’ remoteness and high cost make their connection to national grids a costly venture, making it less feasible.
ABOUT THE SCOPE PROJECT
Research Objectives
To spatially model the types energy access and energy consumption in areas where true measurements of this are unavailable, with a particular interest in mapping determinants of access and energy poverty.
- Improve energy access and affordability monitoring,
- Aid planning of interventions and last-mile electrification (including focus on poorer and marginalised communities)
- Improve existing monitoring surveys (eg. Living Conditions, DHS) through new insights
Objective 1
Identify drivers that predict and influence electricity demand among various consumers (both households and businesses) in different sub-national regions
Objective 3
Assess how best to combine stand-alone, mini-grid and grid infrastructure to address the needs of customers with uncertain and low energy demand
Objective 2
Analyse approaches that utilities in developing countries use or have used to achieve last mile electrification (both challenges and opportunities)
Objective 4
Explore financing options that would be utilised to increase demand among households and businesses that already have access to clean energy
Energy is the heartbeat of human potential, its absence a shadow upon dreams. Yet, in the flicker of a single light, we kindle the fire of progress, banishing the darkness that divides us and uniting in the brilliance of possibility.”

Reflection

Climate Change
Climate change concerns should take precedence over energy access, and efforts should focus on promoting renewable energy solutions, even if they come at a higher cost.
Electricity for Lighting
We should focus on electricity for lighting and nothing more in rural areas to quickly improve access.
Privatization
Privatisation of the energy sector is the key to addressing access issues in Sub-Saharan Africa, as it brings efficiency and attracts much-needed investment.
SCOPE PROJECT
Towards a more complete picture of inequalities in energy access and their determinants
Integrating machine learning, Surveys and qualitative approaches for Context-relevant and disaggregated demand modelling in Planning clean Energy for Ghana and Zambia (SCOPE)

Feedback From Stakeholder Engagement
The energy access and rural electrification workshop left an indelible mark on me. Engaging with experts and stakeholders, I gained a deeper understanding of how empowering communities with electricity can transform lives. This event has kindled a passion in me to contribute to the electrification journey of underserved areas.
The stakeholder workshop on energy access and rural electrification was a pivotal experience. Exploring the challenges and opportunities in bringing light to remote corners underscored the role of energy in holistic development. I'm leaving the event inspired and committed to being a catalyst for positive change in energy-deprived communities.
